3 Ways to Keep Paper Clutter from Taking Over
|
It doesn't have to take a whole lot of time to keep paper clutter from taking
over. Sometimes, it's the teeny-tiny things that you do that take hardly any
time, but are incredibly effective.
1) Whenever you add paper to one of your file folders, go through the folder
to see if older papers can be discarded. Let's say you have a folder marked
'Electronics.' You just bought a new TV and pulled that folder out to insert the
paperwork that came with it. When you open that folder, you quickly go through
it and discover you're still storing paperwork for the television set you've
just gotten rid of. A good time to discard the old paperwork, that is no longer
of any use to you, is when you're ready to insert the new paperwork. Weeding
out, each time you open a file folder, helps reduce the amount of unnecessary
paperwork in your files and your life.
2) Don't allow mail that you don't need to keep to sit on your counter or
table for days. Go through your mail daily. If there's a flyer you're not
going to use, pitch it immediately. Extra paperwork that came with one of your
bills? Recycle anything you don't need right away. A catalog you're not going to
buy from? Say goodbye before the mail even enters your home.
3) Designate a paperwork action station. Some papers you receive require
some sort of action. You might have a form that needs to be read and signed, an
RSVP to respond to, or insurance paperwork that needs to be read. Designate an
area where this paperwork goes, like a
tray in your home office or kitchen.
Every single night, at a consistent time, go through this tray and take action.
Sign and send the form. Respond to the invitation. Read the insurance paperwork.
As you complete the action on each (being sure to get any important dates
written or entered into your calendar), get rid of the paper if it is no longer
needed. If you have to save it, store it where you'll easily be able to find it,
such as a folder in your filing cabinet (Insurance Paperwork.) I generally keep
invitations on our family bulletin board until event day...and then I get rid of
them.
