  Organizing Thought of the Day

Favorite Kitchen Pantry Storage Tricks

I like the pantry in my home to be both organized and clean. To accomplish this, I have a few tricks up my sleeve that you may want to adopt.

1) Line pantry shelves. Certain pantry items tend to leave rings (oils and vinegars), 'powder' (spices, flour, sugar, etc.), or sticky situations (honey, molasses). I line the shelves in my pantry with vinyl placemats from The Dollar Store before storing these types of items inside. When cleaning is required, it's very easy to remove the items, clean the placemats, and then put these items back in storage again.

2) Make use of mason jars. I love, love, love mason jars and have them in all sizes. I store so much in them...pasta, rice, other grains, bread crumbs, crackers, chocolate chips and more. No more opening a box and finding somebody left one lonely cracker behind (or nothing but crumbs!). Storing in mason jars also keeps foods fresher longer. (By the way, if needed, I cut the name of the product and the cooking directions from the original box and tuck it in the mason jar.)

3) Contain small packets. I always store taco mix, soup pouches, dip mix and other small packets in a pretty wooden box in my pantry. This makes them so easy to find and ensures they don't get hidden behind other items or inadvertently pushed to the back of a shelf.

4) Corral small goods used for baking. I have a cute (inexpensive) plastic basket I bought from The Dollar store that I use to contain vanilla extract (and other extracts), cupcake sprinkles, food coloring, birthday candles, and other small goods used for baking and cake/cookie decorating.

5) Think about placement. My pantry has some shelves that are at, or below, eye- level...and some higher upper cabinets. Anything used frequently goes on the lower shelves...and anything used, but less often, goes on the upper shelves. To access my upper shelves requires a step ladder, so I prefer not to have to get on one of those every single day. Examples of items I keep up there are my hand-mixer, a punch bowl and the glass mugs that go with it, holiday cookie cutters, an ice bucket and the tongs that go with it...and other items that we do use, but not every single day.

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's task on my August Monthly Organizing Checklist. The August 10 TO DO focuses on your freezer. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my August Monthly Organizing Checklist.

___ 2. Clean up any sticky or powdery messes in your pantry. Sticky, powdery messes in the pantry are easy to ignore. But I will caution you not to ignore them. At best, it will just require some extra energy to clean them. At worse, these messes could attract bugs...a much bigger problem to contend with.

___ 3. Tackle an August challenge. Aim to achieve at least three or more of our August Mini Challenges this month...and then write to me to share your success. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my August Organizing and Life Challenges.

  Inspiration

'As far as her mom was concerned, tea fixed everything. Have a cold? Have some tea. Broken bones? There's a tea for that too. Somewhere in her mother's pantry, Laurel suspected, was a box of tea that said, 'In case of Armageddon, steep three to five minutes'.' (Aprilynne Pike)
