  Organizing Thought of the Day

Cue Your Happiness

Do you surround yourself with things that make you happy? I hope so. I do. If you feel like you need a bit of prompting in this direction, read on.

Mementos: I love having things around me that remind me of places. One is the art print we bought in Galena, Illinois. Every time I look at it, it takes me back to the day my husband and I saw it and knew it would be perfect for our home. Another is the wooden cutting board purchased years ago in Door County, Wisconsin. I prep food on it every single day. A friend of mine who travels often can tell you in what country she purchased most of the things in her home.

Photos: Most of us have photos of people who are dear to us. We have framed photos of family members on one of our walls. The photo frames are assorted sizes and designs for interest, but they're all black to keep them looking organized and consistent. I also scrapbook and always have at least one of those scrapbooks on display. What's the sense of scrapbooking photos if they're not easily accessible to be enjoyed? Every year, we receive a special family calendar from one of our relatives. It's one of our favorite Christmas gifts and is displayed on our family corkboard in the utility room...we enjoy it every time we're doing the laundry (which is nearly every day).

Flowers and plants: Plants make a room inviting. Orchids last well, and there is always a small pot on my kitchen table. My friend, Stephanie, gave it to me back in 2017 when my mother passed away, and it reblooms every year. I also have a small succulent keeping the orchid company...it was given to me by a fitness friend of mine. It's adorable.

Gifts others have made: Some objects just seem to radiate cheerfulness. A friend of mine is always making something beautiful with wood. She just gave me a wooden block with a photo transfer of my daughter on it. She finished it off with a rustic strand of rope and a heart trinket. It's beautiful and so personal. I have pieces of her work, that she's gifted me over the years, in several rooms. They always give me a lift.

Things I have made: I have a quilt (the very first one I ever made) on a rocking chair in the master bedroom. I also display a decorative, distressed wooden sign in the living room...I made it in an art class a few years back.

Favorite Sayings: A sticky note on my computer reads, 'If you want to have peace of mind, resign as general manager of the Universe.' A good perspective and an excellent daily reminder!

Being organized doesn't mean you can't have things that bring you joy. On the contrary, decluttering items you don't use/love actually frees up your space for possessions that warm your heart and cue your happiness.

What in your home cues happiness? Reply and let me know. I'm hoping to include a bunch in an upcoming newsletter issue.
