Decluttering: A Bit of Advice if You're Struggling to Begin

I have a friend who feels that she has too much stuff in her house and wants to start the decluttering process. The problem is, she has been saying this for a while and has yet to 'get out of the starting gates,' so to speak, as far as diving into the project. When I last visited her, I asked her why she hadn't yet started. Her response was that she didn't know where or how to begin.

I understand the struggle. When you look at a huge decluttering project in its entirety, it is easy to feel overwhelmed...like you are facing an impossible task. It's like standing at the base of a mountain and thinking about climbing to the peak. It may be possible, but the task at hand seems overwhelming.

My advice to her was this: Instead of looking at the project through a fish-eye lens, look at it more like you would through binoculars. Instead of envisioning the whole project, focus on one little part of it instead. If you have a whole storage room full of boxes to go through, pull out one box at a time to sort through, instead of placing yourself in the room full of boxes.

Allow yourself breaks in between. Don't feel that you need to spend countless hours at a time trying to declutter. If 15 minutes is all that you can manage at a time...then so be it.

Finally, don't feel like the entire project needs to be done in one day. Chances are, the room took a LOT longer than one day to get filled up and thus it will take more than one day to get emptied. A little bit at a time is fine...and recommended. Once you start to see the progress you are making, you will most likely be motivated to keep the process going, day by day, until you're done.
