  Organizing Thought of the Day

A Quick Paper Calendar Tip

Back-to-school season is ready to begin...for some students in August, and for other students, in September. My daughter is getting ready to begin her senior year in high school. What??!! She was just a baby yesterday. Time goes by in a blink.

Every year, she buys a new paper planner. This school year, she wanted a large month-at-a-glance format. It has big boxes for each day with enough room for her to fill in the information she needs.

She's involved in so much...day-to-day school with two medical classes, National Honor Society with two board positions, the high school golf team, Academic Decathlon, and a few other extra-cirriculars. Plus, she works as a lifeguard for two different facilities. She is busy, busy, busy. Plus, she is visiting colleges at this time, and has a whole bunch of college-type TO DOs and deadlines.

Needless to say, a calendar is absolutely imperative to her. She's a visual person so she likes to see everything in front of her, with one full month at-a-glance.

I recently asked her if she plans on carrying her large calendar with her everyplace she goes. She said, 'No. But every time I update something on my monthly calendar, I just take a photo of it, and my phone is always with me.'

I then asked, 'well, what do you do when you need to add a new appointment to your calendar and it's not with you?' She said, 'First, I check the photo of my calendar (which is on my phone) to be sure it's not conflicting with anything. Then, I make the appointment and send myself a text message as a reminder to add that date to my calendar when I get home.'

She's a smart cookie.

By the way, sending a text message to yourself is easy. You just open a new blank message, and enter your own phone number in the To: field. (You can even add yourself to your own contact list to make doing this even quicker.)

With technology these days, it's pretty easy to 'carry your entire life with you' (so to speak) on your phone. So, for those of you who like to use paper calendars, using mainly the month-at-a-glance format, and would prefer not to have to carry your calendar everywhere, you might be interested in using my daughter's method.
