  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
Any Ideas for Old Maps Before I Throw These Into Recycling?

A GON Reader Asked:

My husband and I used to take road trips all the time, so we have a ton of old paper maps. We were cleaning out the other day and I was neatly stacking these maps to put back into the filing cabinet. My husband asked, 'Why are you keeping those? Get rid of them.' He's right. There is no reason to keep them. We don't even use paper maps anymore, since we use our digital navigation system for getting here, there, and everywhere, and I don't need to keep them for my memories. We have photos of everywhere we've ever been. Any last recycle/reuse ideas before I throw them into recycling?

--Norma M., Indianapolis, IN

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Norma,

I'm glad you asked. Here are four quick ideas that come to mind:

1) Use as gift wrap. Old maps are wonderful to use as unique gift wrap. Next time you're giving a gift, use one of your maps and tie it with a pretty ribbon.

2) Try your hand at decoupage. If you're crafty, you can decoupage flower pots, coasters, a table, etc. with them.

3) Use as book covers. If your kids/grandkids need to cover their books for school, old maps make great book covers.

4) Use them to make a party banner. Cut the map into triangles, attach them to a string, and use them to make a party banner. You can even tape solid, thick letters on them to spell out phrases like, 'Let the Adventure Begin,' or 'Bon Voyage,' or 'Happy Birthday.'

5) Line a drawer. Find a large map or overlay smaller ones, and use as draw-liners.

Hope this gives you some ideas you, perhaps, haven't thought of. That all being said, if none of these strikes your fancy, get rid of them. No sense holding onto maps you're never going to use.
