Keep Your Treasured Books Organized

If you are at all like me, you love reading. While I love reading on my Kindle, there's still something special about holding an actual book, so I do have a collection of my favorite books at home. Although I am a bit of a minimalist and don't hang onto every book that I have read, there are certain ones that I consider my favorites and want to keep a copy of these in my home to read again. To keep these special books organized and easy to find, I do a few things.

1) Store books in bookcase with titles-at-a-glance. I find the best way to organize my books is to store them, upright, in a bookcase with the spines facing out. This makes them easy to locate and access. By the way, keeping books in a closet or somewhere else, where they can easily get buried under other things, is not the sign of treasured books, but rather the sign of clutter.

2) Keep like with like. I like to separate my books by genre, first and foremost. So, all organizing books are in the same spot, all fiction books are in another, all biographies are together, and so on. This alone may be enough for you...and sufficient. If you want to go a step further, you can organize by author or alphabetize by title, within each genre.

3) Group books you haven't read yet. If you just acquired a few new books to read, keep those together in one spot so they can be easily accessed. When you're done with them, decide if they're going to become part of your permanent collection. If not, donate, sell, or give to a friend.

4) Keep them clean. Books get dusty. I feather dust the tops of my books (and the shelves) when I'm doing my regular cleaning. Every now and then, I'll completely empty a shelf to dust it, as well as the books before returning them back to the shelf.

5) Be aware of climate. Make certain, above all else, that books are being stored in a suitable environment. A damp, musty basement will not be at all good for your books as the moisture will promote mold growth on the paper. It is best to store your treasures in your normal living space where humidity and dampness are better controlled.

6) Organize books on your eReader. I have categorized 'folders' (called Collections) created on my eReader for digital books that I purchase. So, when I'm done reading one of my digital books, it gets dragged into my fiction folder, or biography folder, etc.

Happy reading!

The next book I'll be enjoying is called, Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano. I'll let you know, in a future newsletter, if I enjoyed it.
