Organizing Thought of the Day |
Where Did You Put That Pesky Receipt?
|
You buy something and you decide you want to return it. But where oh where, you wonder, did you put that pesky receipt. You checked your purse, your car, your kitchen table...but it's nowhere to be found. This is why having a system for keeping your receipts organized is important. Here is what I do.
1) Keep receipts for big purchases in the file folder where you're storing the other paperwork for this item. If you buy a refrigerator, a TV, a new dryer, or other 'big ticket' purchase, file all of the paperwork for that item in a labeled file folder in your filing cabinet. Staple the receipt to the owner's manual.
2) Keep receipts for small purchases in a labeled mason jar (or empty, labeled tissue box specifically for this purpose). These are receipts for purchases that you MAY return...groceries, clothing, a charging cord, dishtowels, etc. Every month, once you determine whatever you purchased is definitely not being returned, recycle those receipts.
3) Don't keep receipts that you really don't need. I never keep receipts for the cup of coffee I just purchased, movie tickets, drive-through food purchases, hair cuts...and other similar small transactions. Either tell the clerk you don't need a receipt, immediately pitch that receipt, or keep it until you get home and get it entered into your expenses log...and then pitch it.
4) Some folks scan their receipts. This is certainly an option, but some stores will not accept scanned receipts as proof of purchase. That being said, the IRS does accept scanned receipts. So, this may be an option if you're keeping many receipts to submit to the IRS for your taxes.
