Organizing Thought of the Day

Keep Foods Fresh Longer and Prevent Food Waste
|
Keeping foods fresher, longer, takes just a little bit of organizing know-how
and a bit of prep. Here are five of my favorite tips:
1) Keep ice crystals from forming on ice cream. You buy a container of
ice cream, take what you want, and put the container back in the freezer. The
next time you open that container, there is a layer of ice crystals on top. Now,
it's not fun, or tasty, to eat any more. Help prevent this by placing a piece of
plastic wrap on the surface of the ice cream. Be sure you press it right against
the ice cream so there is no air. Then, put the lid back on and put in the
freezer. Also, don't store your ice cream container on the door. Instead, store
it deep in the back.
2) Keep greens fresh longer. When I bring greens home from the
supermarket, before storing them in the refrigerator, I add a paper towel to the
airtight container (or bag) they're in. Also, I don't wash the lettuce and I do
keep the heads intact until I'm ready to use.
3) Keep dry ingredients in airtight containers. When it comes to rice,
pasta, crackers, beans, pretzels, bread crumbs, and other dry ingredients, mason
jars are your best friend. Transfer these items from the bags and boxes they
come in to clear mason jars. You'll be instantly able to see what you have
left...and those foods will last much longer.
4) Line your crisper drawers. Doing so allows air to circulate throughout
the drawer to prevent your fruit and veggies from spoiling. I swear by a brand
called Fresh Mats.
5. Store leftovers in glass containers. While my husband will
occasionally store leftovers in one of the few plastic containers we have, I'm
not a fan. I much prefer glass storage containers...you can clearly see what's
in them, they don't retain stains or smells, and in my opinion, they make food
look better, taste better, and last longer. I'm much more apt to eat leftovers
stored in
glass food storage containers and we
have less food waste because of them.

Clutter can actually invade your life in FOUR forms...

___ 2. Pitch any freezer-burned foods. Toss out any foods that are the
victims of freezer burn. Meats, fruits, ice cream, etc. can all get freezer
burn. While freezer burned foods are generally safe to eat, they will not taste
their best. Do what you can to prevent freezer burn. A good rule of thumb is: no
air equals no freezer burn. Wrap foods well. If you put something in an air-
tight bag, be sure you squeeze all the air out from the bag before you close it
up. Also, don't leave your freezer open for more than a few seconds.
___ 3. Simplify washing clothes. Are you reluctant to have someone else
do the laundry because you're concerned they're going to choose the wrong
setting and your lovely whites are all going to end up pink? Visit
