Organizing Thought of the Day

The Purple Truck
|
Last week, I spent a weekend with my daughter, Amanda, in Indianapolis. Amanda
found a photographer she liked for her school senior photos, and we decided to
take a mom/daughter weekend to get those done and to have a mini-adventure. It
was a lovely time. I have never stayed in Indiana before. We stayed in Carmel, a
wonderful, bustling city, and the photos were taken near the War Memorial area
in Indianapolis. Something that struck me about this state...every single
person we interacted with, from the hotel, to the stores, to the gas stations,
were so friendly and welcoming.
It's a bit of a drive from Wisconsin to Indiana, and back...about five and a
half hours without stops. And we stopped about three times, so it was definitely
a journey.
On the way back home, there was a long stretch of freeway ahead of us that
we'd be driving on for miles. As I entered the freeway, I noticed there was
a purple truck in front of us. Purple...my favorite color. The driver was
driving just a few miles over the speed limit in the right hand lane.
Normally, I don't like driving behind trucks, preferring to see the open road
in front of me. But this time, I decided to drive behind him for awhile. I
set my cruise control to his speed, leaving a safe distance between my car and
his truck.
I then noticed other vehicles around me...some going 15, 20, a few even 30 or
more miles over the speed limit...some weaving in and out of traffic to get
ahead of somebody else...others tailgating vehicles they perceived as going
too slow.
I thought to myself, so many people are in such a big rush. Are they late for
appointments? Are they trying to get somewhere so they can 'make good time'? Are
they normally just aggressive on the road? How much faster are they going to get
to their destination? Maybe they'll save five or ten minutes? Will this 'saved
time' make that big of a difference? I also thought, I hope they, and everyone
else on the road, remains safe...because some of these actions are kind of
dangerous.
That purple truck, though, didn't speed up. He didn't try to get ahead of the
car in front of him. He wasn't tailgating. He was just driving along, calmly,
steadily, and peacefully. I found a sense of honor, wisdom, and serenity in
this.
We weren't in a rush and we wanted a safe, pleasant drive home to end our
weekend on a good note. I drove behind the purple truck for about 65 miles.
Passing him wasn't even a consideration. We drove behind him until he reached
his exit and went on his way.
Although he had no idea, I sent him a quiet thank you, good vibes, and a wish
for a good, happy life, from our car to his purple truck. From that moment
forward, his purple truck will signify that calmness, that escape from chaos,
that we all need in our lives.
