Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
Is Buying Clothing for Travel Worth It?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Thank you for your packing tips in your
July 11 issue.
I've been told to buy dri-fit clothes for travel as they can be washed and dry
quickly and are lighter. They seem to be more expensive. What are your thoughts
on buying outfits for travel, worth it or not? We usually travel in the winter
to a warmer climate as my husband works road construction.
Love your site and newsletters. I practice many of your ideas and look forward
to new ones. Have a great day.

Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Lydia,
I'm thrilled that you're enjoying my web site and newsletter. Thank you for
letting me know!
I launder clothes wherever I am (at a hotel, at someone's house, etc.) nearly
every time I am away from home more than a day or two. I don't like putting
dirty clothes into my suitcase...and I don't like investing time after vacation
catching up on laundry. My preference is to do it while I'm away. I then can
place clean clothing back in my suitcase, and unpack right into my closet and
dresser when I'm back home.
In all of my years of traveling, and I travel fairly often, I've never gone
through the expense of getting dri-fit clothes. This is not to say that you
shouldn't get dri-fit clothes. Some folks love it. For me though, when I travel,
I simply pack clothes from my closet and dresser that I can toss in the washer
and dryer without it shrinking, getting damaged, etc.
On a past trip I just took, I brought one of my favorite dresses. It's
95% polyester and 5% spandex. It was machine-wash, but I didn't want to put it
in the dryer. So, I washed it and then hung it over the retractable clothesline
in the hotel we stayed in. It was dry within two hours. Polyester dries very
quickly. Cotton also dries fairly quick as well.
Hope this helps a bit!
