Fight Procrastination


Today is National Fight Procrastination Day. It's the day when we are encouraged to stop procrastinating, and start progressing, on something we've been putting off. The origins of this 'holiday' are unknown, but the idea of 'getting going' is a good one.

We've all procrastinated at one time or another. In fact, millions of people struggle with procrastination challenges. That being said, there are ways to combat procrastination and begin checking off all of those TO DOs that we've been saving up for 'someday' down the road. Here are some ways to kickstart those backburner TO DOs.

1. Zone in. First, if you find that you're procrastinating on LOTS of TO DOs, don't focus on everything you're not doing. Pick ONE and focus on getting that one thing started.

2. Break it up. Projects are often overwhelming because they consist of MANY steps. Take your project and break it up into tiny tasks. I like using a set of index cards and writing one task on each card. You can then sort your cards in a logical, or somewhat logical, order.

3. Choose a starting spot. Very often, procrastination happens because we don't know where to start. Using the index cards I just mentioned, pick a card and begin. And remember, not every project has to be started at the beginning. For instance, sometimes when I am writing an article for this newsletter, I'll jot down one or two ideas...rather than starting on sentence one, paragraph one. Little by little, the article comes together. In fact, sometimes my first sentence in an article I'm writing is actually the LAST one I write.

4. Commit to 10 minutes. Even if you work on whatever TO DO it is for a mere 10 minutes...it's 10 minutes closer to done versus 0 minutes closer to done if you didn't start on it at all. Sometimes, once those 10 minutes have gone by, you may be encouraged to work on it 10 minutes more. Honestly, sometimes just getting started is the spark you need to get going.

5. Keep yourself motivated. A little bribe doesn't hurt now and then. Make something you enjoy doing...watching TV, listening to your favorite podcast, browsing through Facebook...contingent on you getting a TO DO or two done.

6. Tell someone you're getting started. Everyone can use a cheerleader. Tell someone what you're doing...and ask them to check up on you. Sometimes, when folks make themselves accountable to others, they have a higher tendency to actually get it done.
