Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Ask Maria:
I don't drive. I don't cook. I am grieving. Advice?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Any advice for a widow who does not drive and is 73? Met my hubby in high
school and we were together for 52 yrs. He died in our kitchen suddenly of V
Fib. I do not cook. I cannot bear to be in the kitchen. I used to though, when
we raised our daughter and son. She is coming to get me away from the choking
smoke here. I cannot tell you how much this pandemic has made my grief a
zillion times worse. Thanks so very much.

Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Sky,
Sending a million good vibes your way. Life can certainly be challenging
sometimes. I'm so sorry about your husband. May you find strength and peace in
the happy memories you both shared. Here are a few words of advice to you:
1. You don't have to drive these days. With the influx of grocery delivery
services, pharmacy delivery services, Door Dash, Uber Eats, personal
concierges, and home meal services, pretty much anything you need can be
delivered to your door. And don't turn down the kindness of family and/or
neighbors who may be willing to help.
2. Not cooking at all means you'll have to rely on services like I mentioned
above or frozen entrees. I will caution you to make choices that are as
healthy (low-fat, low-sodium, and low-sugar) as possible.
3. This pandemic has had a toll on everyone, some to a much higher degree than
others. And I'm so sorry to hear it has hit you so hard. As challenging as it
may be, however, be careful about allowing it to ruin every day ahead. Try to
find something to take your mind off of it...a new hobby, perhaps...word
puzzles...happy movies...a good book...a walk around the block...a friendly
wave to someone you see outside. Avoid the news. Stay in contact with family
and friends on a regular basis, even if it's just a phone call or a text
message. Start journaling. Force yourself to come up with three things you find
beautiful, such as a happy memory, or a beautiful autumn tree, or a song on the
radio...and read those entries every morning. And talk to someone about your
feelings...a friend, a relative, a counselor, a priest or pastor...someone who
will lift you up.
Here's to better, happier days ahead...and big hugs to you!
