  Organizing Thought of the Day

Some Days are Etched in Our Minds Forever

There are some days that are etched in our minds forever...those days that we never forget.

Some because they are beautiful moments.

Others because they are horrific moments.

Today is September 11th...the 20 year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City. I recall it in detail, like it happened just moments ago. The time I woke up...the room I was standing in...what I was doing...what I ate for breakfast...everything. Then, the call from my mother urgently telling me to turn on the TV.

I knew this part of New York City like the back of my hand. I worked in Manhattan for 10 years, just a quick subway ride away from the World Trade Center. I was in both WTC buildings regularly for work and fun. I celebrated with friends many times over at Windows of the World...a spectacular restaurant way at the top (the 107th floor) of the North Tower (Building One).

On September 11, 2001, I was an outsider, halfway across the country at that point, in the safety of my home, watching this horror...praying that I was in bed dreaming. But I was wide awake.

If it's a nightmare for me, someone who wasn't even there, someone who didn't have a spouse, child, or good friend in or around those buildings (or at the Pentagon, or on Flight 93), it's impossible to begin to imagine what being 'in' that nightmare was like.

Your TO DO today: Do something today in remembrance of the victims and the heroes:

--fly your flag at half mast

--give blood

--volunteer/help someone

--resolve to continue to be a good citizen

--take a moment or two in silence and/or prayer

--attend a 9/11 event in your area

--tell a child/grandchild, who wasn't born then, about the significance of that day

--thank a first responder for everything they do each day

--count your blessings...and then count them again

'Always remember. Never forget.'
