Organizing Thought of the Day
|
The Joy of Organizing
|
Would you rather be doing your ironing, or relaxing outside on a sunny day
enjoying the fresh air?
No matter what work-related tasks you're doing, whether it's ironing, paying
the bills, filing papers or clearing out your inbox, chances are you'd rather
be doing something else. That's just natural.
Just being organized in itself, will allow you to enjoy more sunny days, your
favorite hobbies, your family and friends and everything else you enjoy, just
by helping you get the work-related tasks done more efficiently.
One of the ways I use to get those work-related tasks done a lot quicker is to
make those tasks more enjoyable to do.
Now, I know you're probably thinking that there's no way to make ironing more
exciting. It's boring. It's a drudgery.
The trick is to make the task you're doing not boring, but something you could
actually tolerate--or even enjoy.
For instance, when I fold laundry, I generally do so while watching something
interesting on television. Obviously, it's easy to fold and watch TV at the
same time. I actually associate folding laundry with giving myself a TV break.
I get to enjoy a program and get my task done at the same time.
Jenny, one of our newsletter readers told me that when she's dusting, she puts
her favorite 'dusting music' on. To her, 'dusting music' meant loud, energetic,
dance-type music. She said, 'I barely feel like I'm dusting, and I even get my
husband to join my dusting party on occasion. It's so much fun!'
Kevin, another one of our readers, tells me he used to hate washing the car.
But one day his 7-year old son asked him if he could help out, and ever since
then, Kevin washes the car with his son once every week. Kevin said, 'It gives
me the time to talk to my son and share his life on a regular basis. My son
just loves it. In fact, to make it even better, we always go out for a soda or
ice cream cone afterwards. It gives us something special to look forward to
each week.'
Another reader, Ally, used to hate to file in work, so it would constantly pile
up. She determined that one of the reasons she wasn't filing was because the
file folders were worn, tattered and smelled very musty. She dreaded even the
thought of it. Then, Ally decided to toss those old file folders and she went
out and got herself some new file folders--in pink, her favorite color! Ally
said, 'What an enormous difference it made. It's amazing how such a small thing
can change your attitude. I never have piles of filing to do anymore. I do it
on a daily basis!'
Still dreaming about being outside on those nice, sunny days? Take your work
outside with you. Who says you can't pay bills, read correspondence, work on
your laptop, or sew those missing buttons on that shirt you've been meaning to
get to. That work will be easier, if it's in an enjoyable environment.
Whenever you're dreading something that needs to be done, just think of
possible ways you could make it better. With just a little bit of thought and
creativity, you can make virtually any task less daunting, and even more
joyful!

We shrug these things off and pretend they don't bother us, but it hurts and
it ruins our joy of singing.
