Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Cut Kitchen Clutter
|
While browsing through a kitchen catalog the other day, it occurred to me that
the number of appliances and gadgets that we can purchase for our kitchens is
infinite.
There were deep fryers, power juicers, meatballers, fat mops, popsicle cake
pans, tortilla bakers, corn bread skillets, pancake warmers, bacon presses, ice
cream makers, corn steamers, grating mills, fruit socks, egg slicers, fruit
ripeners, fruit wedgers, salad blasters, bean slicers, shish kabob baskets,
bread buddies, and thousands of other kitchen-type thing-a-ma-jigs.
Yikes! It's no wonder that so many kitchens are bursting at the seams with
stuff.
Want to increase the space in your kitchen? A sure-fire way is to get rid of
the gadgets and appliances you never use. Many of these are purchased on a
whim. You see the item on a store shelf, or in a catalog, and you think that it
might be helpful or fun. Then, you get home, use it for a few days, and the
novelty of it all wears off. The item then gets a permanent home on your
countertop, or in a cabinet or drawer, where it gathers dust bunnies for the
next 22 years!
1) Give them the heave-ho. I know. I know. You paid good money for that
butter warmer and deviled egg tray. BUT, if you never use them, they're just
taking up valuable real estate. Give them to a local charity. Perhaps someone
else will make better use of them.
2) Give it a second thought. If you make bread all the time, you may
want to buy a bread maker--and you may even actually use it. But the next time
you see a gadget or appliance that you feel might be cool or nifty, ask
yourself how often you're going to use it--and be honest with yourself. Chances
are, you're not going to eat heart-shaped waffles more than once a year. If you
do, then that heart-shaped waffle maker may be just what you're looking for.
But, if not, save your money and keep your available kitchen space free for
something you're going to use all the time.
