  Organizing Thought of the Day

Teeny Tiny Actions Can Equal Big Changes

So many people equate getting organized to achieving an enormous and impossible feat. Something that only some lucky people are capable of having.

Someone once said to me that she felt she'd be more likely to succeed at climbing Mount Everest than to succeed at decluttering her living room. In her mind, she was only half joking. She really believed that getting organized wasn't something she could ever do. If your thinking is not far from this kind of thinking, then let me ease your mind.

Being organized does not require you to perform time-consuming, complicated systems. It is not rocket science. It is not something that's going to take you years of soul-searching to start. And it's not something that only some lucky people are capable of having. Just a few small organizing actions--a few little, teeny-tiny ones, applied with a positive attitude, can help you be more organized today, than you were yesterday. The more you apply these teeny tiny actions, and those become habits that you do each day, you will be more and more organized.

Don't toss your coat on a chair. Put it directly into the coat closet, on a coat rack, or on coat hooks.

When you remove a price tag from a shirt, toss it immediately, rather than allow it to sit on the counter.

Each day, declutter one thing you don't need.

Get known appointments into your calendar or phone immediately, so nothing is missed.

Don't keep your TO DO list in your head. Be sure your tasks are written down.

Tidy your bathroom each night so you don't have to waste time giving it a complete overhaul each week.

Leave yourself a sticky note on your exit door so you don't forget to bring whatever you need when you leave.

You get the idea. Teeny tiny actions.

Your goal should never be to get totally organized--that's an overwhelming, difficult, frightening, major, impossible goal--and something I would never recommend you try to take on. Nobody on this earth is always totally organized. Even professional organizers are occasionally late for appointments, or sometimes even have a messy desk.

Your goal should be to learn and apply small organizing actions today that will make your life just a little more organized tomorrow.
