Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Do it Daily
|
One of the reasons people avoid organizing and cleaning is because lengthy
periods of neglect caused the tasks to get out of hand. For instance, some
folks dread doing the laundry because they allowed it to pile up for a week or
more. Some folks hate cleaning the bathroom because it hasn't been cleaned in
two weeks and now it's super-yucky. Some people dread filing papers because
they've been allowing them to pile up for a month or two.
Handle common tasks on a daily basis, and they'll take a few minutes. Neglect
common tasks for a week or more, and they'll cause you tons of time and extra
work.
1) Don't build up too much laundry. The average family generates a lot
of laundry. Neglect it for even a few days, and it could grow to the ceiling.
Determine how often you need to do laundry to be fairly caught up. In my family
of three, I wash and dry one load each day. I wash white clothes and towels on
Day A and then colors on Day B...and I keep alternating A-B-A-B. Some families
can wash/dry every other day and always be caught up. Other families may need
to tackle two or more loads a day.
2) Don't leave dirty dishes overnight. Wash a dish when you're done
using it and the food will come right off. Leave a dirty dish sitting in the
sink and you may have to waste time scraping off encrusted food. In my family,
we clean as we go, and we always make a point of doing the dishes right after
we're finished eating...either dishwasher or handwashing. The result is that we
never have dirty dishes sitting in the sink.
3) End bathroom blues. Most people hate to clean bathrooms. That's
because they wait until a week or more, when things really start to get gross.
Mildew is growing in the shower. Wet dust is caked on the counter. The toilet--
well, need I say more? End that yucky feeling forever, by simply doing a 10-
minute bathroom speed clean each day. When you're done using the shower,
immediately spray the walls with shower cleaner. Disinfect the toilet surface
and the sink. Squirt some toilet cleaner in the bowl and swish it around with
your toilet brush. Scoop up any hair, that has fallen to the floor, with a
dry floor cloth
...or use your hand vac and vacuum it up.
4) Banish the dust bunnies. No, I'm not going to tell you to dust your
entire house each day. But I do recommend that you pick one room each day, and
dust that one room. If you use a Swiffer or other electro-static cloth, you
should be able to dust even the largest room in your home, in less than 5
minutes. If it takes you longer than that, you may have too many knick knacks
or photo frames to pick up before you can dust. Re-think and simplify your
decorating scheme so it's not causing you tons of time to clean.
5) File and smile. In my house, I don't have a To File tray. That's
because I don't need it. When I have a sheet of paper to file, it gets filed
immediately. If you just can't bring yourself to do this, then at minimum file
once each day. Who wants to spend hours filing later, when there's no reason
for it to get out of hand in the first place? Take time each day to file, and
you'll have good reason at the end of the day to smile.
