  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
Getting Past, 'These Might Come in Handy Someday'

A GON Reader Asked:

I need to clean out the garage. How can I get past thinking, 'these might come in handy someday' and then the stuff never leaves!

--Nancy Austin, Marion, IN

'I enjoy reading all the tips to make life a little easier. Especially the GON reader tips that show we all have so much in common!'

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Nancy,

It's definitely a good time of year to clean out the garage, especially now that it's fall and a bit cooler outside...and it's not that close to the busy holiday season just yet.

To answer your question, the words 'these might come in handy someday,' in reference to decluttering, are big barriers to your decluttering goals. They are what stands right in front of your starting line, preventing you from blazing that path.

As you already know, keeping something that hasn't been used for years and years, on the off-chance that you 'may, possibly, might, maybe, perhaps someday, suddenly have a need for it, will ensure that this project and the stuff in your garage will linger undone for years.

Try reframing your thoughts. Get rid of everything you're not using now so that you'll have a clean, clear, organized space. Enjoy being able to free your environment and your mind...so you don't have to worry about the 'what if' situation that likely will never transpire.

And really, in this day and age, it's pretty easy to secure whatever you might need in the future. So, if five years from now, in the unlikely scenario that you say to yourself, 'Oh bummer, I didn't keep that gadget,' chances are very high that you can pick up whatever it is at a neighbor's rummage sale or online pretty easily.

Hope this gives you some perspective. I can't wait to hear about your decluttered garage! Be sure to write to me with your progress and accomplishments!
