  Organizing Thought of the Day

The Perfect Sandwich: Tasks and Rewards

A few days ago, I woke up feeling kind of 'blah.' I wasn't sick. However, I was woken up by very loud thunderstorms the evening before, and just didn't get enough sleep to feel my best the following morning. So, I wasn't overly motivated to tackle my TO DO list, but I did have some deadlines to meet. I knew I would need some extra incentive. So I adjusted my TO DO list to look like this:

Task 1: Work on video for web site (One Hour)

Reward 1: Listen to a favorite podcast (20 Minutes)

Task 2: Work on organizing articles for newsletter (One Hour)

Reward 2: Enjoy some quiet meditation and a relaxing cup of tea (30 Minutes)

Task 3: Consult with a client I'm assisting with time management (90 Minutes)

Reward 3: Enjoy a peaceful lunch and my favorite magazine (45 Minutes)

Then I began getting my tasks done and enjoying my rewards afterwards.

Sandwiching rewards in between my tasks did the trick. As I worked on each task, I looked forward to enjoying that reward. And the reward after each was sweet.

Promise yourself that as soon as you're finished with one task on today's TO DO list, that you'll then indulge in one of your rewards. Then, do another task on your TO DO list, and then enjoy another reward.

In doing so, you can get things done on those days you're not truly in the mood to do them. By the way, I don't do this often, but after lunch that day, I actually took a 20-minute nap before starting on my tasks and rewards for the afternoon. This helped tremendously as well.
