Ask Maria:
Handwritten Recipes...I Don't Want to Toss the Original
 |
A GON Reader Asked:
Maria,
I consider myself an organized person, but I am stumped. I decided to clean out my recipe clippings (and the miscellaneous papers that inevitably get mixed in with them). My original plan was to type the ones I knew I would use, save the file to my computer, and toss the clippings. But, I have several handwritten recipes from friends and family that are quite old. Some were passed down from my mother, and I really do not want to toss the original papers.
I also have some publications from companies like Betty Crocker, Kraft, etc., that are small pamphlets and date back to the 1950's. I'm not sure how to organize all of this and maintain the integrity of the originals. I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter as I always find your suggestions helpful.
Thank you,

Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Ramona,
I totally get it. There is something to be said about having that recipe passed down from one's mother or grandmother. There is something special about recipe pamplets from years ago.
When it comes to recipes, I have two methods I use. For recipes I find online, I save them all on Pinterest, in categorized digital folders.
But I also have a recipe binder, and this is filled with recipes I've pulled out of magazines...but also recipes from my mother and some of those pamplets as well.
All you really need is a 3-ring, D-ring binder, index dividers, and clear, archival-safe page protectors that are 3-hole punched. Each index divider is for a recipe category, like Side Dishes, Dessert, or Entertaining Tips. Insert the clear page protectors behind each index divider...as many as you need.
Then, take the recipe from your mom, or the pamplet from the 50s, etc. and place it into the sheet protector.
Everything is still categorized AND you can do so while maintaining the originals.
Hope this helps!
