Maria,

I have had success in keeping track by facing all of my clothes hangers one way. Whenever I wear something, I put it back in the closet, but turn the hanger the other way. I can tell at a glance if it has been worn before and then know to add it to the hamper at the end of the day. Thanks for all you do.

Dear Maria,

This was a very important question and a clear and practical response. Thank you.

The main reason that I am very reluctant to store just-worn clothes anywhere near my unworn garments is that I am very careful not to have any clothing that might attract clothes moths.

Clothing with any body odor, oil, or spills from food (even the tiniest droplet of milk) are powerful magnets for clothes moths who will happily gobble your finest cashmere, wool, or blended garments.

The just-worn garments need not be wool to attract the tiny invaders. Odors or any soil on other clothing will still attract moths who then move on to your woolens.

Nothing is more heartbreaking than taking out a sweater and seeing it marked with tiny holes, remnants of a moth feast.

Cedar blocks are minimally effective with no guarantee.

“Tidying up” just worn clothing might save time and water, but it can also lead to anguish.

If I wear an item for a few hours that doesn’t need to be washed, I hang it back in the closet inside out. That reminds me that it has been worn once but can be worn another day.

10 Clever Uses for Dryer Sheets (Beyond the Laundry Room)

1. Freshen Up Your Drawers: Tuck a dryer sheet into dresser drawers or linen closets to keep clothes and towels smelling fresh.

2. Remove Pet Hair: Run a dryer sheet over couches, chairs, or clothing to easily lift pet hair and lint.

3. Deodorize Trash Cans: Place a dryer sheet at the bottom of your trash can to help absorb odors.

4. Repel Dust on Baseboards: Wipe down baseboards with a dryer sheet—its anti-static properties help repel dust longer.

5. Keep Shoes Smelling Fresh: Slip a dryer sheet into each shoe when storing them to reduce odors.

6. Tame Flyaway Hair: Gently rub a dryer sheet over your hair to reduce static and fly-aways, especially in winter months.

7. Clean Soap Scum: Wet a dryer sheet and use it to scrub shower doors and tiles—great for breaking down soap scum.

8. Prevent Musty Suitcases: Place a dryer sheet inside your suitcase when storing it between trips for a fresher scent.

9. Deter Pests: Place dryer sheets in areas like garages, basements, or campers to help keep mice and insects away.

10. Polish Chrome Fixtures: Buff faucets, showerheads, and other chrome surfaces with a dryer sheet for a shiny finish.
